Salem advances freight barn preservation initiative

Economic Development · Meeting of May 7, 2026

NY SALEM — Salem advances freight barn preservation with steering committee. Canadian Pacific agreed to quit claim the Salem Freight Barn to Northeast Rail, a transfer omitted from official records since 1994, and the committee formed a steering group to oversee architectural surveys, a Battenkill Railroad feasibility study, and creation of a tourist attraction at Salem Station house. The town joined the County's Pro-Housing Initiative, declined an alternative sewer site off Stanton Hill Road, and planning began for an electronic speed sign in Shushan.

The Salem Washington Academy roof repair project is progressing under budget toward completion by fall.
